Caity-Shea Violette is a writer and actor based in Chicago, IL. Her work has been seen in Washington D.C., Las Vegas, Minneapolis, NYC, Toronto, Denver, and Chicago. A Minnesota Native, she holds a BFA in Theatre from the University of Minnesota, Duluth and is a graduate of the St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists. Caity-Shea is passionate about sharing the stories of women, particularly survivors of gender-based violence and those living with mental illness, by creating new work for the stage and page. Her work as a playwright has received national recognition including the Kennedy Center's National Partners of the American Theatre Playwriting Excellence Award (Winner, 2012), David Mark Cohen National Playwriting Award (National Semifinalist, 2012), Kennedy Center's Ten-Minute Play Award (National Finalist, 2013), InspiraTO Playwriting Award (Winner, 2015), Shakespeare's Sister Playwriting Fellowship (National Semi-Finalist, 2014). Most recently, Caity-Shea was selected as one of 100 female writers to participate in A Room of Her Own Foundation's Retreat and Waves Discussion Series in New Mexico.
Caity-Shea is a company member and the staff Literary Associate at Halcyon Theatre, where she was first referred to the Voices and Faces Project as a writing workshop applicant. Since taking the workshop in the fall of 2014, she has remained close with several workshop alum and together they formed a monthly writing group to share new work in a variety of forms including poetry, prose, and plays.
In addition to her work in the artistic community, Caity-Shea is also the Manager of Marketing and Communications at Thresholds, a non-profit based in Chicago that provides healthcare, housing, and hope for thousands of people with mental illness to assist them in reclaiming their lives. When not writing or performing, she is a nationally-certified Power Vinyasa Yoga instructor and an advocate for animal rescue. More information available at www.caitysheaviolette.com
