I m telling it like it is

A call for poetry + writing submissions about the injustice of mass incarceration.

As April is National Poetry Month, the Louder Together team at The Voices and Faces Project is seeking submissions for a crowdsourced poem that will feature the voices and testimonies of returning individuals and citizens (formerly incarcerated persons of any immigration status), currently incarcerated persons, and those negatively impacted by the criminal justice system in the United States of America.

We especially welcome submissions that speak to the racial, economic and social injustices that have contributed to the crisis of mass incarceration in our nation.

We believe that powerful poetry deserves to be heard as widely as possible — to be truly part of civic life and to enhance the public's understanding of the crisis of mass incarceration. Your words and poetry that speak to a lived or witnessed injustice can serve as a call to action for our society, while highlighting aspects of the experience of incarceration that the media too often ignores. Your voice can contribute to change.

Submissions that speak hard truths are especially encouraged. But your poem can also focus on your hopes for your community, your solidarity with others negatively impacted by these systems, and the things you have learned on your personal journey. The creative team at The Voices and Faces Project will use lines from accepted submissions to craft "Telling a new story about mass incarceration" which will be the third crowdsourced poem in our Louder Together poetry series. Contributors to the poem will be fully credited; submissions are due by June 15, 2023.

We cannot wait to read your submission, and are thankful to the Illinois Humanities Council for helping to fund this project!

“Telling a new story of mass incarceration” Submissions are due by June 15, 2023.

About “Louder Together,” The Voices and Faces Project's crowdsourced poetry and performance series.

We’re Louder Together.

An initiative of The Voices and Faces Project —"Louder Together" seeks to create poetry and performances that speak to a range of human rights and social justice issues. Each crowdsourced poem in the series utilizes the voices of those who have lived through or witnessed an injustice, and uses their words as a call to social and political action. We work closely with trusted allies — including Surviving the Mic, Justice for Migrant Women, and World Without Exploitation — to reach communities where they are in order to create work that is inclusive, representative and change-focused. Lines of poetry from selected submissions are woven into a final, crowdsourced piece which is then brought to life, through a video, live performance, or through one of The Voices and Faces Project's literary publications. So go ahead: Get loud with us!

Watch and share "Imagining a World Without Exploitation," the first video poem in our 2021 Louder Together Series.

We’re making news, one narrative at a time.

Journalist Tetiana Anderson interviews Voices and Faces Project Anne K. Ream

Comcast Newsmakers, the longest-running news and public affairs platform of any cable operator in the country, was created to recognize national trailblazers and engage them in meaningful conversations about issues, ideas, and community challenges.

With a focus on individuals and organizations doing work that is making a measurable, national impact, the newsmaker series lifts up those who are creating change in truly innovative ways.

The Voices and Faces Project is proud to be an addition to the Comcast Newsmakers series. We sat down with journalist Tetiana Anderson to discuss the power and purpose of our testimonial writing program, the ways that personal narrative can break through ideological barriers during these politically polarized times, and how graduates of our writing workshop are using their testimonies and writing to call the world to not just compassion, but social action.

Our stories are our power.
At The Voices and Faces Project we’re using them to create change.
The Voices and Faces Project is an award-winning non-profit storytelling initiative created to bring the names, faces, and testimonies of survivors of gender-based violence to the attention of the public. Through our educational and advocacy trainings, survivor story archive and signature program, The Stories We Tell — an immersive, two-day testimonial writing workshop for those who have lived through or witnessed gender-based violence or other human rights violations — we seek to change minds, hearts, and public policies through the power of personal testimony. The Voices and Faces Project has been named one of America's Best Charities by the board of Independent Charities of America, and is a registered 501c3 organization.
