❝
For survivors of gender-based violence, The Voices and Faces Project’s testimonial writing program creates a space where the unspoken becomes spoken, and the parts of ourselves and our stories, long hidden, take form.”

Those are the words of memorist Hannah Sward, who recently participated in The Stories We Tell, The Voices and Faces Project's immersive, two-day testimonial writing program for survivors of gender-based violence and other social injustices.
A writer whose critically praised memoir, Strip, speaks beautifully to the pain caused by the sex trade, Hannah's voice is changing the way the world looks at commercial sexual exploitation. And, as one of our Stories We Tell writing workshop alums, she is part of a global Voices and Faces Project community — now almost 1300 writers strong — who are using their personal narratives to create political and social change.
During each Stories We Tell workshop a cohort of emerging and established writers and activists come together to read and discuss culture-changing literature and representation from across history and social justice movements… take part in a series of innovative, real time writing exercises… and share creative work in moderated, trauma-informed feedback sessions. With a focus on memoir, fiction, non-fiction and poetry, The Stories We Tell was created to support those who seek to use testimonial writing as a vehicle for personal or political transformation.
Facilitated by Voices and Faces Project founder Anne K. Ream, the author of Lived Through This, a memoir of her global journey spent listening to survivors of gender-based violence, and taught by novelist and Yale University creative writing instructor R. Clifton Spargo, our award-winning testimonial writing program isn't just training writers. It's changing lives.
We're setting our 2024 Stories We Tell Testimonial Writing Workshop schedule now. To bring our award-winning program to your community or NGO, email Janet@voicesandfaces.org.

The Stories We Tell, our award-winning immersive, two-day testimonial writing program for survivors of gender-based violence and other human rights violations, is now being offered in Toronto, Canada through an innovative new partnership between The Voices and Faces Project and Nellie's, a Toronto-based NGO focused on advocating for vulnerable women, children and persons. Our workshop series in Canada included a series of Stories We Tell writing workshops and a second training, Creating Change: Testimony & Strategic Storytelling for Educators, Advocates and Direct Service Providers. "Working closely with our partners at the grassroots level was critical to our success building a programming series that speaks to the pressing human rights challenges facing our allies in Canada, including the plight of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls, and the problem of human trafficking," noted R. Clifton Spargo, our Voices and Faces Project writing workshop instructor and co-creator.
Our October 2023 workshop series was attended by an inspiring community of survivor leaders, artists, advocates and direct service providers seeking to more effectively use narrative and story to create measurable social and political change. We look forward to bringing the workshop series back to Canada in 2024.

Hosted by our longstanding allies at Boston-based Victims Rights Law Center — the country's preeminent NGO advocating for the civil rights of victims of gender-based violence — the 2023 National Sexual Violence Law Conference brought together over 250 attorneys from across the nation for an October conference. Their goal? Exploring new ways to create a more just and equitable world for victims, while fighting legal systems that too often fail to understand what it means to live through violence.
On October 26th, Voices and Faces Project founder Anne K. Ream gave the conference's multi-media closing keynote, sharing photos and lessons taken from her multi-country journey spent listening to survivors, and reminding the audience that, in Anne's own words, "This work is hard, and necessary and noble… but every now and then, we need to remind ourselves that we are not only fighting for justice… we are also fighting for joy." Since our inception, our Voices and Faces Project team, including Anne, has spoken on four continents and in 48 US States, sharing powerful stories with audiences that include the Clinton Presidential Center, the Obama Fellows, Soroptimist International, and others.

And congratulations to our friends at Victim Rights Law Center for hosting such a powerful, purposeful conference!

Our stories are our power.
At The Voices and Faces Project we’re using them to create change. |
The Voices and Faces Project is an award-winning non-profit storytelling initiative created to bring the names, faces, and testimonies of survivors of gender-based violence to the attention of the public. Through our educational and advocacy trainings, survivor story archive and signature program, The Stories We Tell — an immersive, two-day testimonial writing workshop for those who have lived through or witnessed gender-based violence or other human rights violations — we seek to change minds, hearts, and public policies through the power of personal testimony. The Voices and Faces Project has been named one of America's Best Charities by the board of Independent Charities of America, and is a registered 501c3 organization.
