Use your voice VOTE

In the United States today our politics are increasingly polarized. The differences that divide us are great. The things that unite us feel fragile. And our ability to engage in a respectful dialogue with those we disagree with is challenged in unprecedented ways.

At The Voices and Faces Project — a non-profit testimonial writing program for survivors of gender based violence and other human rights violations — we recognize that participants in our programs bring different lived experiences and political ideologies to the table.

We know that we won't agree on everything. But during our Stories We Tell writing workshops we each agree to this: Diversity is celebrated. Difference is never demonized. And decency, civility, and deep listening are critical to creating a safe, creatively compelling community.

These are the organizational values we live by. And these are the values we encourage our partners, allies and writing workshop alumnae to vote by. Because this year, more than ever, it matters.

exploitation-free world.

The Voices and Faces Project has partnered with World Without Exploitation, the national coalition to end human trafficking and sexual exploitation, to create WorldWE VOTE, an eight point checklist for those seeking to vote for candidates who are committed to creating a safe, just and exploitation-free world.

Find The Right Words

During Find the Right Words — a six part communications and storytelling training curated by Voices and Faces Project founder Anne K. Ream — the Rural Women Collective Fellows at Justice for Migrant Women will explore effective strategies for using personal narrative to create political change … think in new ways about how language and word choice can open audiences up, or shut them down, in our politically polarized era … consider uniquely creative mediums for effective storytelling (including spoken word, public performance, and poetry) … and gain practical skills in public speaking, media engagement and personal essay writing.

Each session will be led by a different creative or storytelling thought leader affiliated with The Voices and Faces Project; together this series will provide a deep and wide education in strategic storytelling and change-focused communications. Testimony & Transformation, our writing workshop for returning citizens, enters its second (and now virtual) year.

Caity-Shea Violette will present to the Kentucky Library Association at their upcoming virtual conference.
Testimony & Transformation is co-led by facilitator Jimmie Briggs (pictured) and creative writing instructor R. Clifton Spargo.

Through the support of the Illinois Humanities Council, The Voices and Faces Project launched Testimony & Transformation: Telling a New Story About Mass Incarceration in 2019. Thanks to a renewal of our IHC grant, we will again offer our newest writing workshop series to the Chicago community in Winter, 2021. Special thanks to R. Clifton Spargo and Jimmie Briggs for creating and leading the workshop. Application period will open in November, 2020.

Our stories are our power.
At The Voices and Faces Project we’re using them to create change.
The Voices and Faces Project is an award-winning non-profit storytelling initiative created to bring the names, faces, and testimonies of survivors of gender-based violence to the attention of the public. Through our educational and advocacy trainings, survivor story archive and signature program, The Stories We Tell — an immersive, two-day testimonial writing workshop for those who have lived through or witnessed gender-based violence or other human rights violations — we seek to change minds, hearts, and public policies through the power of personal testimony. The Voices and Faces Project has been named one of America's Best Charities by the board of Independent Charities of America, and is a registered 501c3 organization.
