Sexual and intimate partner violence impact one in six women worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. While all of us are vulnerable to gender-related violence, Black Girls face unique barriers in seeking justice and accountability. Studies have shown that they are more likely than their white peers to be victims of sex trafficking, more likely to be sexualized or "adultified" in media representations, and less likely to have their stories capture the public's attention when they go missing or are harmed.
Protect Black Girls, a new Chicago-based coalition, was created to challenge and change this nationally. What began as a collective of individuals focused on the fight for Hope - a young Black Girl who was sexually exploited and abused in Chicago - has evolved into a multi-organization coalition that seeks to create a more just and equitable world for all Black Girls.
Voices and Faces is proud to be a founding member of this coalition, driven by our trusted allies at Dreamcatcher Foundation and A Long Walk Home. Let's make our city safer and more just for Black Girls, and all of our girls. Join the movement.

It's time to tell a new story about mass incarceration. Testimony & Transformation, an immersive, two-day writing workshop that is coming to Chicago November 13 - 14th, was created to do just that.
During the workshop, led by novelist R. Clifton Spargo and human rights journalist Jimmie Briggs, with the support of spoken word artist Marline Johnson, participants tap their own creativity and experiences as they build storytelling skills and develop stories of witness to be used to create social change. Guided, trauma-informed conversations will reflect on witness writings and speeches from authors such as Angela Davis, James Baldwin, and Jericho Brown. Participants will reflect on their own experiences in the justice system while examining the intersections of racism, gender identity and violence, and historical trauma in their families and their communities.
A series of in-seminar writing exercises will help workshop attendees explore their voices, test their skills, and craft personal narratives that can be used to create lasting political or social change. To find out more about the program or bring Testimony & Transformation to your own community, email testmonial@voicesandfaces.org. Applications due October 15, 2021.

Our stories are our power.
At The Voices and Faces Project we’re using them to create change. |
The Voices and Faces Project is an award-winning non-profit storytelling initiative created to bring the names, faces, and testimonies of survivors of gender-based violence to the attention of the public. Through our educational and advocacy trainings, survivor story archive and signature program, The Stories We Tell — an immersive, two-day testimonial writing workshop for those who have lived through or witnessed gender-based violence or other human rights violations — we seek to change minds, hearts, and public policies through the power of personal testimony. The Voices and Faces Project has been named one of America's Best Charities by the board of Independent Charities of America, and is a registered 501c3 organization.
